Passive entry on a car or truck, sometimes called keyless entry systems, comes with a variety of important benefits. The most popular advantage of a keyless system is the convenience it affords. Got your hands full? You can still get the hatch open with a wave of your foot, depending on the version of keyless entry on your car. Not to mention, no more fighting to insert the key into the lock, just press a button and go. The better security keyless entry offers is another big advantage. The electronics in the key must be recognized by your vehicle before it will start the engine or even allow access to the interior. There are some keyless entry systems that can lock your doors automatically when you walk away from the car. Last but not least, there’s the fun part of keyless entry, the remote ignition. Not all Keyless Systems are passive, but all Passive Entry systems are keyless entry systems. Confused yet? This is how it functions. Keyless Entry involves you pushing buttons on a key fob to unlock and lock the vehicle doors and other functions like opening the trunk. Passive Keyless is when you can keep your keys in your pocket (or purse) and you touch an area on the car (like a spot on a door) to lock and unlock the doors, or shake your foot to open the trunk area. One bonus of passive entry systems is that they almost always include Keyless Ignition. Keyless Ignition lets you start and drive your vehicle without the keys ever leaving your pocket.
Even though they return similar results, Remote Start and Keyless Ignition are not the same things. Keyless Start lets you start and drive your car without the need for a normal key. Just push a button, and go! Remote Start lets you start your car through your key fob. Remote Ignition is beneficial in extreme temperatures such as very cold or very hot days by allowing you to start the car and help heat it up in the cold. You will no longer get into a hot car again, simply use the Remote Start and let your car cool off before you take off.
A Smart Key is the electronic part of your key that is used to remotely access a vehicle. The buttons for your wireless functions are located on the Smart Key itself. The Smart Key sends signals to the car to open the trunk, lock the doors, and so on. Some cars will not start without the Smart Key, as they are part of the security system.
